Message of solidarity to our striking colleagues at the BAIC assembly plant in Coega in South Africa
August 9, 2026: German-Soutrh-African Friendship Society Marikana: Dear colleagues, We in Germany have also heard about your courageous and persistent struggle. In the face of the global cut-throat competition in the automotive industry, your struggle is of enormous significance. It sends a signal that automotive workers worldwide are going on the offensive against the destruction programme of international monopolies such as VW, Daimler and BAIC.

At the 2nd International Automotive Workers’ Conference in 2020 in Vereeniging, South Africa, the following resolutions, amongst others, were adopted:
• “We demand collective agreements for all and that, in every country, equal pay for equal work be paid in accordance with national living standards, as well as a general pay rise.” • “We will not stop in our struggle for better pay and working conditions. We want a rich, dignified and healthy life for all people, in harmony with nature – a society free from exploitation and oppression, because another world is possible.” (International Programme of Struggle of the Motor Workers and their Families)
Through the Chinese conglomerate BAIC, you are already experiencing today what lies in store for workers worldwide. In this respect, you are also pioneers for the international industrial proletariat and bear a great responsibility. We, the German-South African Friendship Society Marikana, which was founded in 2014 and took this name in memory of and in honour of the victims of the Marikana massacre, will raise awareness of your struggle in Germany. We wish you continued strength and courage and assure you of our unreserved solidarity.
